Change the default way that a file type opens in windows XP

We have already discussed about the file and extensions type in Microsoft windows xp. Now, we will discuss how to open a file in other program.

 

Like if I have a file in Microsoft word and I want it open it with notepad, then I have to change the details for that particular file extension to create a permanent default for that file type.

For Example –I want my all .gif files always open with windows picture and Fax viewer, I  can configure it by following these steps >

 

• Go to start menu and select Control Panel.
• Select appearance and themes in control panel, select folder option there.
• On the File Types tab of the Folder Options dialog box, scroll down and select GIF.
• In the Details for ‘GIF’ Extension area, next to Opens With: , click Change.
• In the Open With dialog box, click Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and then click OK.
• Click Close in the Folder Options dialog box.

File Name Extensions

A set of characters at the end of the file name which describes the type of information which the file has is called File extension. A file name extension can also indicate which application is associated with the file. For instance, my file is mypicture.jpg. Here jpg is the file extension, which describes that this file is a paint document. Likewise if my file name is mydocuments.doc than then .doc is a Microsoft word document.

 

While accessing a fine in Microsoft windows xp, it compares the file name extension to the already installed applications to launch a appropriate application for displaying the file. This process of comparing an extension to an application is called file association. It determines which application will open the file by default.

Understanding File and Folder Types

As we have discussed in our earlier post about the attributes of files and folders. In this post we will discuss about the files to which windows xp provides access.

 Local - Local files are those files and folders which are stored on local computer.

 Shared Files – These files and folders are shared between the users. They can be shared between from one computer to another or from one network to another network.

 Offline - Files and folders from network shares that are available when you are

not connected to the network. Offline files are available only in Windows XP Professional,

not in Windows XP Home Edition. When you enable a shared file or folder for offline use, Microsoft Windows caches a copy of that file or folder on the hard disk of your local computer so that while you are disconnected from the network, you can work with the local copy exactly as if it were the original. When you reconnect to the network, Windows synchronizes your cached files with the remote counterpart, so that the file or folder is current on both your local computer and the remote network share.
