In this blog post I am going to discuss how to create multiple boot system with windows operating system. Some time we need to create multiple boot system but we not able to create, Here some tips and precaution provided by Microsoft support expert to create multiple boot system.

Before creating the multiple boot system we have to follow some precaution.
• Before attempting to create a multiple-boot system, be sure to back up your current system and all data files.
• Each operating system must be installed on a separate volume. Microsoft does not support installing multiple operating systems on the same volume.
• If you have only one volume on your computer, you have to reformat and repartition your hard disk to contain multiple volumes before you begin creating a multiple-boot configuration, unless you are simply installing another copy of Windows XP.
• Do not install Windows XP on a compressed drive that was not compressed using the NTFS compression utility.
• You have to use a different computer name for each operating system if the computer is on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP secure domain.
• Install the operating systems in the following order:
1. MS-DOS
2. Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me
3. Windows NT
4. Windows 2000
5. Windows XP

Manual Steps to Create Multiple boot system

Follow the steps to create multiple boot system with XP and MS DOS, 95, 98 and windows ME

Note You can only install a single instance of Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me in a multiple-boot configuration. You cannot configure a computer to multiple-boot Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me because each of these platforms use the same boot file. For example, you can use Windows 95, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, but you cannot use Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP.

You have to install Windows XP only after installing MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me to prevent these operating systems from overwriting the Windows XP boot sector and the Windows XP startup files.

To create a multiple-boot system with Windows XP and MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me:

1. Ensure that your hard disk is formatted with the correct file system.
2. Install the multiple operating systems into separate volumes, in the following order: MS-DOS; Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me; and then Windows XP.
3. Do one of the following:
o If you want a multiple-boot system with MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me along with Windows XP, install MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me, and then install Windows XP.
o If you want a dual-boot system with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me, along with Windows XP, you should install Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me, and then install Windows XP.
Install each operating system according to the standard installation procedure.

  • copy c:\windows\tmp\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
  • copy c:\windows\tmp\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
  • copy c:\windows\tmp\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
  • copy c:\windows\tmp\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
  • copy c:\windows\tmp\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
Note Some of these command lines may be wrapped for readability.

3. Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer restarts.
Note This procedure assumes that Windows XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder. Make sure to change C:\Windows to the appropriate windows_folder if it is a different location.

If you have access to another computer, to save time, you can copy the text in step two, and then create a text file called "Regcopy2.txt" (for example). To use this file, run the following command when you start in Recovery Console:

batch regcopy2.txt

4. Click the General tab, and then select the Load startup items check box.
5. Click the Startup tab, click Disable all, select the check box for the first startup item that is listed, and then restart the computer. If the problem does not occur, then you can eliminate the first startup item as the cause of the problem.
6. With the first startup item selected, select the second startup item check box, and then restart the computer. Repeat this process until you reproduce the problem.

Caution:
When you remove Internet security programs, your computer is unprotected. If you have problems installing Microsoft Security Essentials after you remove existing Internet security programs, contact Microsoft Security Essentials Support immediately by submitting a case online.

Step 2: Make sure the Windows Installer service is running

1.In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then press ENTER.

In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type services.msc, and then press ENTER.
2.Right-click Windows Installer, and then click Start. If Start is unavailable and the Stop and Restart options are available, the service is already started.
3.In the Services window, on the File menu, click Exit.
4.In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

–or–

In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start, click in the Start Search box, and then type command prompt. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
5.Type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER and then press ENTER. Note that there will be no indication that this command has succeeded or failed.
6.Try to install Microsoft Security Essentials again.

Step 3: Start Windows in Selective Startup mode

1.In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then press ENTER.

–or–

In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type msconfig, and then press ENTER.
2.In the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the Load Startup Items check box.
3.On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then clear all the check boxes for the services that remain in the list.
4.Click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer.
5.Try to install Microsoft Security Essentials again.
